Details of Samsung's tablet computer, the Galaxy Tab, have surfaced on Vodafone's internal system, giving a glimpse of the company's plans to take on Apple's iPad.
The South Korean company's tablet device comes with a 7.0-inch touch screen display -- with a 480 by 800 pixel resolution -- and is built from active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, or AMOLED, technology, for more vivid imaging and lower power consumption.
It runs on a 1-gigahertz ARM11 processor with Google's Android 2.2 software, dubbed "Froyo," and can make phone calls and view Flash content, both of which aren't available on the iPad. Additional features include a 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS for Google Maps, Wi-Fi connectivity and 16-gigabytes of memory with a microSD slot.
In June, Samsung had said it was planning an Android tablet for later this year.
After failing to transition to smartphones, Samsung, the world's second-largest phone maker, has been scrambling to develop products to counter the success of Apple's iPhone and iPad devices. The company laid out an aggressive plan to catch up, launching half of its high-end devices running Android and another third using Bada, its own proprietary software.
Earlier this month, Samsung launched the Captivate for AT&T and Vibrant for T-Mobile. It plans to release the Epic 4G for Sprint and the Fascinate for Verizon in the coming weeks. All the devices are part of its Galaxy S line of Android-powered smartphones.
