Buy a Samsung HDTV, Get a Galaxy Tab Free

By Sandy Fitzgerald | Fri Aug 19, 2011 4:23 pm

Best Buy is giving a Samsung Galaxy tablet to customers who buys a new large Samsung television, in a deal that might encourage tablet shoppers to try something other than an iPad.

Starting Sunday and running through August 27, anyone who buys a select Samsung 46-inch HDTV for $1,500, or a 55-inch model for $2,000, will get a 10.1-inch, 16-gigabyte Galaxy tablet thrown in for free. The tablet retails for about $530, according to Samsung's website.

Best Buy's "Perfect Match" package may be a major retailer's way of sparking sales of tablets other than the iPad. Apple's product dominates the tablet market, and challengers have not been able to match the iPad in terms of sales. There may be some overstock of other tablet models in light of sluggish sales of HP's TouchPad and Research In Motion's PlayBook.

Underscoring the difficulties of going against the iPad, HP, for example, announced recently it is halting WebOS operations and will no longer be in the mobile device business. Best Buy reportedly only sold about 25,000 of the 270,000 HP tablets it has in stock.

The Galaxy Tab has proven more popular than the HPs still lingering on the shelves, but have yet to match Apple's iPad sales. Many insiders believe pairing the Galaxy with the popular Samsung television may put more of the Android-powered devices on the market, and could even attract other people to the Galaxy as word-of-mouth spreads.

Meanwhile, Apple has shipped 28.7 million iPads since April 2010, and the Cupertino, Calif.-based business has had difficulty keeping up with demand, even without resorting to buy-one, get-one-free promotions such as Best Buy's.
