Samsung plans to launch a tablet device in coming months, a move the company hopes will gain ground in its competition with Apple and help it transition away from conventional phones.
"We are planning to launch a tablet computer, named Galaxy Tab, no later than in the third quarter of this year," said J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile division. No further details, such as the price or markets it would be available, were provided.
The device is widely expected to feature a "Super-AMOLED" touch screen, which offers 20 percent brighter imaging over traditional displays with 80 percent less reflection in outdoor sunlight, 1.2-gigahertz A8 processor and 16-gigabytes of memory.
For Samsung, the world's second-largest maker of phones by shipments after Nokia, the move comes amid the successful launch of Apple's iPad, which forced rivals to scramble and develop similar products.
Hewlett-Packard, Dell, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion and even Google and Verizon are all planning to introduce their own tablets.
After posting strong sales in past years, Samsung has struggled to make the leap to smartphones. To catch up, the company decided to implement an aggressive strategy to launch one-third of its high-end devices with Bada, its own mobile operating system, and another half running Android software.
"Smartphones will quickly replace conventional phones once the price falls below around $200, which I expect will happen not in the distant future," Shin said.
In May, Samsung unveiled the Wave, the first smartphone to run Bada. Earlier this month, the company launched the Galaxy S -- its latest Android-powered smartphone -- in Asia and Europe.
