Apple said that iPad sales have topped two million units in less than 60 days since its launch in early April, boosted by strong demand for the touch-screen tablet in domestic and international markets.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company debuted the iPad in nine countries -- Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K. -- nearly two months after it was released in the U.S on April 3.
Apple, which had previously said it sold over one million units in the U.S. in just 28 days, has had trouble keeping up with strong demand at home, forcing the company to delay the start date of its international sales by a month.
The company reiterated that the iPad will be available in nine more countries -- Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore -- in July.
"Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do," said Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive. "We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone."
Analysts widely expect Apple to sell about five million iPads this year, but say that strong international momentum for the company's iPhones could spill over and push iPad sales even higher. Last week, Apple overtook Microsoft in value to become the largest tech company in the world.
On June 7, Jobs will deliver the opening keynote for Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, widely seen as the event to unveil the company's new iPhone 4.
