Hewlett-Packard is developing a new tablet computer, code-named "Hurricane," running newly acquired handset maker Palm's WebOS mobile operating system, people familiar with the matter said.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company bought Palm for $1.2 billion last week, largely for its WebOS platform, which it said it plans to scale "across multiple connected devices."
Insiders say Palm had been working on its own prototype tablet before the buyout, but development halted when the struggling smartphone maker ran short on cash.
Now, with HP's deep pockets now backing the project, design of the Hurricane is in full-swing, as the company works towards a projected third quarter product launch.
In January, HP unveiled a 10-inch tablet called the Slate, which ran Windows 7 software and was similar in size and features to Apple's iPad, but negative buzz prevented the company from officially announcing a release date.
Sources now say the company has scrapped the idea of a Windows tablet in favor of the WebOS device, citing "serious problems" with poor performance and a hefty weight.
Apple, which delayed international sales by over a month due to stronger-than-expected domestic demand, said it will begin selling the iPad in nine countries starting May 28, with a second round of markets in July.
